Ambient music shapes itself incredibly well to narratives in one form or another, whether implied or literal. This week’s edition of At Water’s Edge features both. We’ll hear tracks that create a story in the listener’s mind, and we’ll hear tracks with actual narrated stories. So sit back with your tea or coffee or chocolate, and prepare to be regaled…

Released on World Elephant Day, August 12th, “Ganesha” is a charity project to raise funds and awareness for the protection of our incredible elephants, endangered worldwide. 100% of all proceeds go directly to helping elephants via World Animal Protection US, an official partner in this release: Worldanimalprotection.us.org
Premier Indian illustrator, Archan Nair, created the all-original, beautiful depiction of Ganesha specifically for this project. The Hindu elephant god, Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts, sciences, intellect and wisdom.
The music itself centers around recordings of elephant vocalizations, pitched to the key of the track, elephant footsteps timed to the beat, and three Ganesha mantras, provided by Srikalogy, with additional vocals by Laura Fay Lewis and Alokah Bear. Fellow producer Pericles provided many of the percussive and bass sounds to draw from as well. A background field recording of African savannah runs throughout the entire track.
“Deep Time” is intended for contemplation and meditation, and is included exclusively in the download version of this release.
“The Motoko Files – Cyber Prophecy (Abridged Narrated Story)” – The Roboter – The Motoko Files: Cyber Prophecy (2014)
This is a short story inspired by such classics as Blade Runner (1), Ghost in The Shell (2), and William Gibson’s cyberpunk novels (3).
Story intro: Motoko is a cyber-cop who wakes up on top of a skyscraper with her cyber brain in shambles as she tries to reconstruct her memories. Who is she? What happened to her?”
The music soundtrack is in a cinematic electronic genre, deeply evocative of the mystery and adventure as it unfolds in the story of a world where technology is integrated into the very core of each human being.

“The Tall Tales That Sly Demons Whisper Around The Fire Camp” – Wings of an Angel – The Tall Tales That Sly Demons Whisper Around The Fire Camp (2014)
The backstory for this track is a dream I had… In this dream, inspired by the first scene from the movie CLOUD ATLAS – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRK3dfj2f18 , i’ve become an eternal demon at the crossroads, sitting my the whole of eternity at the firecamp, and dreaming life, death, what’s beyond and in-between… Via tall tales that my demon friends and I invent and whisper to each other on the fly, as though improvised… Because noise in vast dark space becomes whispers at best…
It’s a recurrent motif for me – a fire camp, life-weary demons, tall tales that go beyond the imagination…
Built around an original tale by Rebekkah Hilgraves, this track is part of an upcoming collaborative release from Juta Takahashi and Rebekkah Hilgraves that includes stories and poetry composed and read by Rebekkah, with original music by Juta.
