Keeping your PlayStation 5 DualSense controller powered up is essential for uninterrupted gaming sessions, but understanding its charge status can sometimes feel confusing. Sony designed the controller with subtle light signals and quick on-screen menus to help players monitor power levels easily. Staying tuned to daily gaming news can keep you informed on hardware updates and best practices for accessory maintenance.
Understanding Light Bar Signals in Rest Mode
When your PlayStation 5 is in Rest Mode and connected to the DualSense via USB, the controller's light bar will slowly pulse an orange color. This orange glow indicates that power is actively flowing into the internal battery. Once the charging process finishes completely, the orange light will turn off entirely to show the cycle is done.
Checking Battery Level While Playing
If you are actively gaming with the controller plugged into the console or a wall charger, the light signals behave differently. You will not see the pulsing orange light while the PS5 is powered on and running. Instead, press the PlayStation button to pull up the Control Center menu on your screen.
At the bottom of the Control Center dashboard, look for the small controller icon near the power settings. While charging, an animated battery icon with moving bars will confirm that power is being received. Once fully charged, the animated bar stops moving and displays three solid bars next to the controller icon.
Troubleshooting Charging Issues
If your DualSense light bar does not pulse orange in Rest Mode, check your console power settings. Go to System Settings, select Power Saving, and ensure that power supply to USB ports is enabled for at least three hours. Using a damaged USB-C cable or an incompatible wall adapter can also prevent the controller from drawing power efficiently.
